Colour has been fundamental to Cockburn’s work and his assured style and palette carry many of the hallmarks of the Scottish Colourist tradition. At the same time his work displays a refreshing individuality with an inspiring balance of order and spontaneity, providing them with a sense of space and atmosphere. This richness of some of his canvasses, the impasto palette knife application of paint and the inclusion of occasional flashes of strong counter point colours give his paintings an intensity and symbolic power.
Responding to the landscape and coming up with something interesting and meaningful, Cockburn's work is a celebration of what he sees and his desire to convey to the viewer a sense of place and mood. The selection of an image, a scene, a landscape - initially he draws what he sees in pencil or pastel, editing and distilling the subject matter throught the process of drawing and painting. The paintings are then completed in the studio, with the desire to making it more real.
